Perfect Form Physiotherapy is a unique practice located in the heart of North Sydney, Australia. Pioneered by physiotherapist Lisa Howell, this clinic is devoted to the education and rehabilitation of dancers in all genres.
Throughout her previous experience as a health professional, Lisa was frustrated at the number of clients who had received inappropriate or incomplete treatment. Most dancers she saw were frustrated at the lack of application of their previous experiences with treatment and rehabilitation to the specific needs of a dancer.
This was the driving force behind creating a clinic that focuses on educating dancers and providing one-on-one rehabilitation and technique correction in a caring and holistic environment. All staff members have a strong history of involvement in dance and are passionate about supporting current performers in all areas. Lisa is a physiotherapist specializing in the education and treatment of dancers. She trained at Otago University in New Zealand, and after working in New Zealand, Australia and Europe, she has returned to Australia to fulfill her dream of sharing the wonders of the human body with the world. She is the founder of Perfect Form Physiotherapy and also lectures to various ballet schools and sporting institutions on exercise rehabilitation and safe technique. Lisa specializes in treating injured dancers and performing pre-pointe assessments and screening tests to identify any possible issues as soon as possible. Sessions are often aimed at maximizing an individual's performance, rather than waiting for an injury to occur. Lisa has also developed a series of resources to allow dancers, athletes and the general public - wherever they are in the world - to have access to vital information that may change the way they work with their bodies. She enjoys working with athletes because of the responsibility they take for their own management, nd their drive to achieve, or return to, full capacity as quickly as possible. Lisa began dancing at the age of 5, doing both the RAD Syllabus and Flamenco dance. She is also a qualified instructor in the Pilates method and has had extensive personal involvement in various forms of Yoga. Throughout her professional studies and career she has continued her involvement with dance and uses her personal experience as a constant learning tool to advance her knowledge. Sally was born and educated in the United Kingdom. She worked as a fulltime professional dancer for over 7 years, and has danced in venues all over the world, most notably with companies within the UK, Europe and the USA. Sally is passionate about dance and now shares her continued love of this amazing art form within her physiotherapy and exercise training. Sally’s holistic, total body approach to injury prevention and treatment allows her to work with dancers and athletes alike at a level which helps them achieve and maintain their greatest potential. Sally is also a qualified Personal Trainer and Pilates Instructor and maintains a keen interest in rehabilitative exercise training. Ryan was born and bred in New Zealand and made the move to Australia early in 2007. Ryan began working at Perfect Form Physiotherapy shortly after his move and now plays many roles within the practice. Ryan began his training at the age of 4 and has not looked back. He has trained and performed with many different ballet and theatre companies, and is also an accomplished musician. He spent many years studying dance at the Dance Education Center in New Zealand and holds distinction certificates in both the RAD and BBO syllabi. Ryan now teaches ballet and contemporary at many well known schools across Sydney. Ryan is also a highly skilled massage therapist, trained in Raynor Massage. He completed his training at the Brandon Raynor School of Natural Therapies. Throughout his training he has come to understand the importance of massage therapy, not only for therapeutic and rehabilitative purposes, but also for optimal health and wellbeing. Ryan’s knowledge and love of dance helps him understand the need for ongoing physical therapy for dancers, and athletes alike, to maintain optimum performance. Lindsay is an experienced dance teacher and a Grade Examiner for the Royal Academy of Dance. Her knowledge of correct dance technique, terminology and her exceptional eye for grammatical errors have been invaluable in putting together all of the resources that we have developed over the years. Lindsay is often away examining in Asia and Australia so is sometimes away from the clinic, but is warmly welcomed whenever she is back in town! Deborah has been the latest addition to the PFP team, and is now eagerly awaiting the arrival of her first child. Deborah is an accomplished Yoga teacher and ex dancer, and will be returning to the practice once the wee one is safely settled into the world, to run some private yoga sessions with our dancers. Deborah’s extensive knowledge of yoga has helped develop the Yoga based mobility programs that are evolving within the practice, and we are looking forward to producing a "Yoga for Dancers DVD" later in the year.
